Understanding Infertility
Infertility affects over 7 million people in the U.S., representing 12% of women of childbearing age,
or 1 in 8 couples (2002 National Survey of Family Growth). The disease affects 60 – 80 million couples world-wide (http://www.who.int/en/).
Primary infertility is a disease of the reproductive system which inhibits the ability to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse. It affects both men and women. Even though a woman may be able to conceive, infertility is also considered a disease that prevents a woman from carrying a child to term after multiple pregnancies.
Secondary infertility is the inability to conceive or carry a chld to term even though one or both partners have children of their own. In 2006, government statistics show 3.3 million people suffering from secondary infertility. It is estimated that approximately 20% of women experience secondary infertility at some point in their lifetime. (http://www.targetwoman.com)
